French actor Gerard Depardieu appeared in a Paris court on Monday, facing serious allegations of sexual assault on a film set, underscoring a significant moment in France's #MeToo movement. The 76-year-old cinematic icon has consistently denied the charges, marking the first time he stands trial amid mounting accusations.

Depardieu's attorney, Jeremie Assous, reaffirmed his client's innocence, stating that Depardieu is eager to speak during the proceedings. The trial, which began around 1:30 p.m. (1230 GMT), could extend up to three days. Initially set for October, it was postponed due to the actor's health concerns.

The allegations stem from incidents in 2021 during the filming of 'Les Volets Verts', where prosecutors claim Depardieu assaulted two women. They describe a scene where he allegedly behaved inappropriately with one woman on set and another on the street. If convicted, Depardieu faces a potential five-year prison sentence and a substantial fine.
