In a significant announcement, the wages of Khadi artisans are set to rise by 20% starting April 1, 2025, as stated by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) Chairman Manoj Kumar. Currently, spinners earn Rs 12.50 per hank on the charkha, and this will increase to Rs 15.
The rise in wages coincides with an impressive increase in the sales of Khadi and Village Industry products over the last decade. From Rs 31,000 crore, sales soared to Rs 1,55,000 crore by the financial year 2023-24, marking a fivefold jump. Particular growth was noted in Khadi clothes, whose sales increased from Rs 1,081 crore to Rs 6,496 crore.
The 'Khadi Revolution', backed by government initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, has driven massive economic benefits for artisans. With 10.17 lakh new employees in FY 2023-24, KVIC anticipates breaking further records in FY 2024-25, including significant sales recorded at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025 event.
