Nigeria Reclaims Heritage: Benin Bronzes' Return

Nigeria's quest to reclaim its cultural heritage is taking a bold step forward. The National Museum Commission, with the assent of the royal ruler, is leading efforts to recover the Benin Bronzes, invaluable artifacts that were looted in 1897 by British forces during a raid on the Kingdom of Benin, located in present-day southern Nigeria.

Despite previous uncertainties, a 2023 decree by then-president Muhammadu Buhari clarified that the Oba of Benin is the rightful owner of these artefacts. However, the Oba has entrusted the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) with their management, including display, conservation, and pursuing reparations.

Director-General of the NCMM, Olugbile Holloway, asserted that the return of these objects transcends mere exhibition. It's about restoring dignity and correcting historical injustices. Negotiations with institutions like Cambridge University's Museum are ongoing, with an understanding that the return of these pieces is imminent.
