A celebratory Homecoming Week at Tuskegee University turned tragic when a shooting occurred on Sunday, leaving one person dead and several others injured. Notably, the deceased was not a student, although among the injured were university attendees. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made regarding the incident.
Tuskegee University officials have contacted the victim's family, while injured individuals have been hospitalized at East Alabama Medical Centre and Baptist South Hospital. Police Chief Patrick Mardis reported that the affected students include a female shot in the stomach and a male shot in the arm.
The incident took place as the 100th Homecoming Week for the historically Black university was drawing to a close, highlighting the vulnerability of life according to a university pastor. Investigations continue, and the mood within the small community of Tuskegee remains somber.
