An ongoing art exhibition in the national capital is celebrating the birth centenary of renowned artist Francis Newton Souza. The showcase features 45 rare and iconic pieces from the 1950s to the 1980s, with some works being publicly displayed for the first time.
Exhibited is the private collection of Mahender and Sushma Jain, emphasizing Souza's strong ties with the Dhoomimal Art Centre and the Jain family. 'Knowing Souza not just as an art giant but as a dynamic personality whose work remains relevant today was a privilege,' remarked Mohit Jain, director of the art center.
Souza, a co-founder of the Progressive Artists' Group, was the first post-independence Indian artist to gain significant recognition in Europe. His boundary-pushing experimentation solidified his status as a modern art pioneer. The exhibition closes Sunday, and a limited-edition book featuring commentary by scholar Shankar Tripathi offers further insights into Souza's legacy.
