Kerala's Devaswom Minister V N Vasavan has vehemently opposed the Centre's newly released fireworks rules, labeling them as irrational and unnecessary. He has sent a letter demanding modifications to the recent gazette notification, which includes conditions for conducting fireworks displays.
A contentious stipulation requires that licensed magazines be at least 200 metres away from the display site. Vasavan, in a letter to Union Minister Piyush Goyal, called for a practical approach, emphasizing the significant role fireworks play in religious rituals and festivals in Kerala.
Citing the iconic Thrissur Pooram festival, Vasavan warned that implementing these rules could lead to massive protests. State Revenue Minister K Rajan also expressed disappointment, highlighting the setback it poses to festival enthusiasts. Both ministers urge the Centre to reconsider its decision.
