A tragic search and rescue effort off the coast of Samos, a Greek island, culminated in the recovery of two bodies after a migrant vessel, with 24 people aboard, foundered in harsh weather conditions. The coast guard reported this on Monday.

Upon receiving a distress call, a coast guard vessel successfully rescued 22 passengers from a semi-submerged boat located north of Samos. Survivors reported two individuals missing, leading to their eventual discovery Monday morning.

This incident is part of a series of dangerous crossings by migrants attempting to reach the European Union from Turkey or North Africa. Last week, another shipwreck near Kos claimed four lives. These perilous routes remain a preferred path into the EU for those fleeing conflict and poverty.
