The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is investigating the structural failure of the gangway, installed in 2021. Commissioner Walter Rabon emphasized the minimal maintenance required for such structures, vowing a thorough investigation.

According to Rabon, up to 40 individuals were present on the gangway at the time of the collapse, with 20 people falling into the water. The fatalities were not island residents, and three injured individuals remain in critical condition.
