In an unprecedented act of interfaith solidarity, 27 Muslim inmates, along with British national Ramanpreet Kaur, who is on death row, are observing the Navratri fast in a district jail. This move reflects a unique unity among the jail's 217 inmates, including 17 women.
Jail Superintendent Mijaji Lal disclosed that the group not only fasted but also participated in a havan (ritual offering) on Ashtami. Kaur, convicted in 2016 for her husband's murder, was sentenced to death in 2023, yet the spiritual observances managed to bridge differences.
The jail administration has ensured that fasting inmates are provided with 750 grams of boiled potatoes, 500 grams of milk, fruits, and sugar daily, along with necessary puja materials for conducting their rituals, according to the superintendent.
