In a troubling escalation in Red Sea tensions, a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker was struck by suspected Houthi rebel missiles on Thursday. Authorities confirmed the attack, underscoring persistent threats to international shipping lanes amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations center reported that the ship sustained damage from the projectile, although no fire or injuries were recorded. Security firm Ambrey identified the targeted vessel, which was navigating dangerously close to the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeida.
These hostilities follow a sequence of assaults, with Houthis having attacked over 80 merchant vessels, affecting global commerce worth USD 1 trillion. However, many of these vessels had little or no connection to the Middle East conflict, highlighting the broader implications for international maritime safety.
