Celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam was honored with the National Award for Best Tamil Film for his 2022 cinematic masterpiece, 'Ponniyin Selvan: I.' This illustrious recognition was presented by President Droupadi Murmu during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

'Ponniyin Selvan' is a cinematic adaptation of a beloved Tamil historical novel and has garnered unanimous praise for its impressive direction, intricate storytelling, and breathtaking visuals. In an interview with ANI, Mani Ratnam expressed his pride in adapting such a significant story to the big screen, emphasizing its cultural importance.

The film, which was eagerly received in Tamil Nadu and among the Tamil diaspora worldwide, is based on the classic novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The story is a fictionalized account inspired by the life of the legendary emperor Rajaraja I of the Chola Empire. Its success transcended linguistic barriers with notable performances in its Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada dubbed versions across India.
