Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi, fresh off India's historic Chess Olympiad victory, has opted out of defending his title at the Vugar Gashimov Memorial Chess Super Tournament in Azerbaijan. Instead, he will attend a felicitation function hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Claiming last year's title by outperforming compatriot Arjun Erigaisi, Gujrathi was part of the victorious Indian men's team which triumphed in the Open category of the Chess Olympiad. He announced his decision to return to India via 'X', formerly Twitter, expressing his eagerness to meet the Prime Minister.
'I was overjoyed to learn our Hon'ble PM wants to felicitate the Indian team. It's amazing that such a short notice, he's taking time for us,' Gujrathi wrote. He will be replaced by Aravindh Chithambaram for the tournament scheduled from September 25-30.
