Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies' has been selected as India's official entry for Oscars 2025, the Film Federation of India announced on Monday. The Hindi film, a satire on patriarchy, was picked from a shortlist of 29 films, including noted titles like 'Animal' and 'Aattam'.

The 13-member select committee, headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, unanimously decided on 'Laapataa Ladies' for the best international film category at the Academy Awards. Other noteworthy contenders included 'Srikanth', 'Vaazhai', 'Thangalaan', and 'Ullozhukku'.

Released in March 2023 to critical acclaim, 'Laapataa Ladies' tells the story of two brides who are accidentally swapped during a train journey in rural India in 2001. Produced by Aamir Khan and Rao, the film has resonated deeply with audiences both domestically and internationally.
