Albania's Prime Minister, Edi Rama declared on Sunday that Tirana, the capital city, will serve as the base for the Bektashi Muslims' transition into a sovereign state. The initiative is designed to foster moderation, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
Addressing the United Nations, Rama highlighted Albania's history of saving Jewish refugees during World War II and sheltering Afghans post-Taliban takeover. He emphasized that the nation is renowned for its religious harmony and celebrated contributions to global humanity, notably through Mother Teresa.
Although the legal modalities for granting sovereignty to the order are not yet clear, the Bektashi community sees this step as a significant stride towards promoting global religious tolerance. The order will operate independently, similar to the Vatican, and will be governed by Baba Mondi and a special council.
