Indoor amusement centers are experiencing a surge in popularity across India, with more than 500 operational facilities covering 6.6 million square feet across 83 cities, according to JLL.

Real estate consultant JLL India reported that Indoor Amusement Centers (IACs) provide a range of entertainment options for individuals and groups. These centers combine various games and attractions, often including food and beverage offerings.

The report highlighted that 72% of IACs are located in shopping malls, 19% in standalone properties, 6% in high-street locations, and 3% in mixed-use projects. This footprint is expected to grow to approximately 11 million square feet by 2028.

IACs are emerging as significant contributors to footfall and consumer engagement, with over 90 malls hosting multiple IACs. Rahul Arora, Senior MD and Head of Retail Services and Office Leasing Advisory at JLL, noted that 1.43 million square feet of space has been leased by IAC operators in the past 20 months.

Innovative formats such as 'eatertainment,' competitive socializing, and edutainment are also gaining traction, adding to the growing presence of gaming arcades and trampoline parks. Pushpa Bector, Senior ED and Head of DLF Retail, mentioned that indoor amusement concepts have strong growth potential as consumers seek alternative live entertainment options beyond cinema.

As developers integrate IACs into initial mall designs, the sector continues to evolve. Trehan Iris Executive Director Abhishek Trehan emphasized the robust demand for innovative entertainment spaces to match consumer preferences. Bhumika Group MD Uddhav Poddar added that malls are becoming multifaceted experiences, combining shopping, entertainment, and leisure.

The rapid spread of malls in India, as observed by Lulu Mall General Manager Sameer Verma, reflects growing consumerism and changing lifestyle choices. MVN Infrastructure Founder & MD Varun Sharma pointed out that indoor amusement centers are pivotal in driving foot traffic to malls, offering diverse activities for all age groups and highlighting a broader shift towards experiential entertainment.
