The Odisha government on Friday withdrew its contentious decision to permit liquor-serving beach shacks on Puri beach. The retraction came just two days after heavy criticism from the Puri Shankaracharya and various socio-cultural organizations.

The excise department's notification stated that no licenses would be granted for beach shacks within Puri municipality or within 5km of any site of socio-religious or cultural significance. The new excise policy, announced on August 30, aimed to promote tourist entertainment and generate revenue by allowing liquor to be served at shacks near sea, rivers, lakes, and dams.

Opposition from socio-cultural groups spiked after the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) unveiled plans to set up beach shacks along the coastline from Puri to Konark. Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati led the objections, emphasizing that Jagannath Dham should remain a hub for spiritual and religious activities. He argued that introducing liquor would undermine the area's sanctity.
