Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday condoled CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury's passing, describing it as a 'cruel blow' to forces defending democracy, liberty, equality, and human rights.

Yechury, a pragmatic Communist and a key architect of coalition politics since the mid-90s, succumbed to a lung infection at a Delhi hospital. He was 72.

After being critical for the last few days and on respiratory support at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Yechury passed away on Thursday morning.

Chidambaram emphasized that Yechury's death is a significant loss to India's progressive forces. 'I salute the memory of my friend and comrade, Sitaram. I extend my condolences to his family and the CPI(M),' Chidambaram added.

As the INDIA bloc gains momentum, Chidambaram noted that Yechury's absence will be deeply felt.
