Hundreds of workers at Kenya's main international airport demonstrated on Wednesday against a planned deal between the government and India's Adani Group. The unrest has left planes grounded and hundreds of passengers stranded.
The government revealed that the build-and-operate agreement with Adani Group aims to renovate Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, with additional runway and terminal construction, in exchange for Adani controlling the airport for the next 30 years.
The Kenya Airport Workers Union announced the strike, claiming the deal will result in job losses and deteriorating terms and conditions for remaining staff.
Kenya Airways has reported flight delays and potential cancellations due to the ongoing disruption at Nairobi's primary airport.
Last week, workers threatened to strike but postponed actions pending negotiations with the government.
Concerns were raised when unidentified individuals were seen with airport officials taking notes and photographs, believed to be Adani representatives preparing for the takeover, according to local media.
The High Court temporarily halted the deal's implementation on Monday until a case filed by the Law Society and the Kenya Human Rights Commission is resolved.
