A pair of hippos and five hog deer are among the 13 animals recently inducted into the Alipore Zoological Gardens' expanding family, according to Zoo Director Subhankar Sengupta.

These animals were sourced from the Nandankanan Zoo in Odisha, which also provided a pair each of swamp deer and four-horned antelopes. In exchange, Alipore Zoo sent a pair of giraffes, two pairs of green iguanas, and a monitor lizard to Nandankanan.

Moreover, a pair of lions, a female tiger, a pair of Himalayan black bears, and two pairs of mouse deer have also joined Alipore from Nandankanan. On March 4, the zoo saw the arrival of two tigers and a Tapir from the Bengal Wild Animal Park, followed by a white royal Bengal tiger, a pair of lemurs, a grey wolf, a striped hyena, a black swan, and five wild dogs from Vizag on April 25. The zoo now boasts a total of 1,266 animals, all reportedly in good health.
