LOS ANGELES, Sept 9 - James Earl Jones, the legendary American actor whose commanding presence and resonant voice became hallmarks of characters like Darth Vader, passed away on Monday at the age of 93. His agent, Barry McPherson, confirmed that Jones, a longtime sufferer of diabetes, died at his home surrounded by family. No cause of death was provided.

Jones' career spanned decades, featuring iconic roles both on stage and screen. Despite facing a childhood stutter, Jones developed a deep bass voice that made him an unforgettable presence in projects ranging from 'The Lion King' to numerous Shakespearean plays. He particularly gained fame for voicing Darth Vader in 'Star Wars', a role he eventually embraced despite initial reluctance.

Throughout his career, Jones garnered numerous accolades, including Tonys, Emmys, and a Grammy. Although he didn't win a competitive Academy Award, he was nominated for his role in 'The Great White Hope' and received an honorary Oscar in 2011. Beyond his acting achievements, Jones preferred to convey messages on race and society through his roles rather than direct activism, marking him as a trailblazer for Black actors during the Civil Rights movement.
