Grammy-winning hip hop artist Kendrick Lamar will headline the halftime show at this year's Super Bowl on February 9 in New Orleans, according to an announcement by the National Football League, Apple Music, and Roc Nation on Sunday. Lamar, hailing from Compton and an influential figure in the Los Angeles rap scene, has garnered 17 Grammy wins and previously performed during the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige.
With a news release, Lamar stated, "Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I'll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one." Since his debut album "good kid, m.A.A.d city" in 2012, Lamar has achieved massive success, including being the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win a Pulitzer Prize for his 2017 album "DAMN."
Last season's Super Bowl halftime show featured Grammy-winning artist Usher, underlining the prestige of this performance slot in the U.S. music calendar. Over the years, artists like the Rolling Stones, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Bruce Springsteen have graced the Super Bowl stage, making it an iconic platform for musicians.
