Hundreds of devotees gathered to bid a tearful goodbye to Lord Ganesh as they took the elephant-headed deity's idols for immersion after one and a half days.

The 10-day Ganesh festival began in the city with pomp and gaiety on Saturday, as families and 'savajanik mandals' (public groups) installed idols at homes and community pandals. The idols immersed on Sunday afternoon came from households, destined for the sea and artificial ponds created by the civic body.

Civic authorities confirmed that the immersion of idols proceeded smoothly without any untoward incidents. They have deployed 12,000 personnel, set up 71 control rooms, and arranged 204 artificial ponds across the city and suburbs to facilitate the process.

Additionally, 761 lifeguards and 48 motorboats have been stationed at the beaches for safety. The civic body has also arranged for the collection of 'nirmalya' (flowers and other offerings) brought along with the idols.
