A devastating fire at a school dormitory in Kenya has resulted in the death of 17 students and left 13 others seriously injured, police reported on Friday.

Authorities are expressing concerns that the death toll could rise, as investigations into the cause of the fire continue. The blaze occurred on Thursday night at Hillside Endarasha Primary in Nyeri county, according to police spokesperson Resila Onyango. “We are investigating the cause and will take necessary action,” Onyango stated.

Boarding schools in Kenya frequently experience fires, some of which are attributed to student unrest. A notable incident in 2017 saw 10 high school students perish in a school fire in Nairobi.
