Karnataka Film Pros Demand Judge-Led Panel to Tackle Sexual Harassment
Over 100 film professionals have urged the Karnataka government to appoint a committee, led by a retired judge, to address sexual harassment issues in the Kannada film industry. The call comes in the wake of the Justice K Hema Committee report affecting the Malayalam film industry. The letter, from FIRE, demands systemic reforms and development of policies to ensure a safe environment for women.
Over 100 film professionals have called upon the Karnataka government to establish a committee, led by a retired judge, to address sexual harassment issues within the Kannada film industry.
In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, signed by 153 film professionals including prominent actors like Kiccha Sudeep and Ramya, the group demanded a thorough investigation into systemic problems, particularly regarding sexual harassment in the industry. FIRE, an advocacy group led by director Kavita Lankesh, has been at the forefront of this initiative.
The letter, dated September 4, follows the Justice K Hema Committee report's revelations in the Malayalam film industry, which have encouraged many survivors to come forward. FIRE emphasized the need for policies to ensure a safe and equitable work environment for women. They suggested appointing a retired High Court or Supreme Court judge committed to gender justice to lead the committee. Despite multiple attempts, Kavita Lankesh was unavailable for comment.
