Release of Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ Delayed Amid Censorship Controversy

Kangana Ranaut's film ‘Emergency’ will not meet its scheduled release date of September 6 as the Bombay High Court refused to direct the censor board for immediate certification. The delay follows objections from Sikh organizations and a directive from Madhya Pradesh HC for CBFC to consider these objections before certifying the film.

Kangana Ranaut's film 'Emergency' has hit a roadblock, missing its scheduled release date of September 6. The Bombay High Court declined to grant urgent relief for its certification, following objections from Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, and a directive from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to consider these objections before issuing a certificate.

Justices B P Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla remarked they would have instructed the CBFC to certify the film 'today' if not for the Madhya Pradesh HC's directive. The case emerged after Sikh groups claimed the film misrepresents their community and distorts historical facts, sparking controversy.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises, the film's producer, sought immediate certification from the Bombay HC, arguing that the CBFC had prepared the certificate but hesitated to issue it due to potential unrest. The court upheld that judicial propriety prevented them from contravening another HC's order, directing the CBFC to address objections by September 18.
