Vidit Gujrathi, an Indian Grandmaster renowned for his 'accidental' foray into chess, initially saw sports as a stable career option compared to the unpredictable schedules of his doctor parents. This decision, though made due to a misjudgment, has worked out well for the 29-year-old from Nashik.
Gujrathi, who will be playing for Mumba Masters in the upcoming Global Chess League's second season in London, was initially directed towards chess after a local club advised him to defer his cricketing ambitions. He found the move fortuitous and aimed to excel at chess by challenging his father.
Today, Gujrathi holds a rating of over 2700 and has competed at elite levels, including this year's Candidates Tournament. As he gears up for the upcoming league, his focus is on securing the trophy for Mumba Masters and improving his personal performance, highlighting the strong camaraderie within the team.
