Widespread Sex Abuse Uncovered in 'Mollywood'

NEW DELHI, Sept 3 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A landmark report revealing widespread sexual harassment and exploitation of women in Mollywood must serve as a "wake-up call" for men in the film industry, according to Bina Paul, a founder of a female rights group that pushed for the investigation.

The Hema Committee's report has sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film and TV industry since its release last month, uncovering a series of sex abuse allegations against top male celebrities, triggering resignations, and prompting police investigations. "This must act as a wake-up call," said Paul, an award-winning film editor and founding member of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC).

The nearly 300-page report highlighted problems such as poor working conditions, wage gaps, and demands for sexual favors. Paul urged proper implementation of sexual harassment laws, gender sensitisation programs, transparent pay structures, and inclusive policies to enhance women's safety and opportunities in the industry.
