In a significant development, eight non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Mumbai have thrown their weight behind the ongoing state government-led survey of informal tenants in Dharavi, Asia's largest slum.
The NGOs allege that non-locals are attempting to derail the critical redevelopment project by disseminating misleading information, according to letters they submitted to state authorities.
The survey, which is steered by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project/Slum Rehabilitation Authority (DRP/SRA) and executed by the Adani Group, has seen substantial progress. Local and welfare groups have rallied in support of the effort, positing that the redevelopment will transform living conditions for thousands of residents.
