In his first address since stepping down as the President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) amid the #MeToo scandal in Mollywood, actor Mohanlal on Saturday urged the public not to 'destroy' the Malayalam film industry. He endorsed the Hema Committee report and assured that those guilty would be punished, promising full cooperation with the investigation. He also mentioned that elections for new positions within AMMA will be conducted soon.

A redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report, detailing harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry, was released earlier this month. The report's shocking accounts of exploitation and mistreatment have sent shockwaves through the industry. 'When such incidents emerge, potentially jeopardizing the entire industry, our options become limited. We urge that the focus not be solely on AMMA. The investigation is ongoing, and all statements are public,' the veteran actor stated on Saturday.

'There are internal disagreements within the association as well, and we will take appropriate measures,' Mohanlal added. 'An election will be held soon. This is not an attempt to evade responsibility. The Hema Committee report's release was a correct decision by the government, and we welcome it. I have served as AMMA president for the last two terms, and the entire Malayalam cinema community is accountable for the executive members' resignations.' The veteran actor, along with other AMMA leaders, resigned after serious sexual abuse allegations were made against prominent figures in Malayalam cinema, including director Ranjith and actors Siddique and Mukesh.

Further addressing the media and public, Mohanlal appealed not to tarnish the whole industry, emphasizing its diligent work culture. 'AMMA cannot answer all questions. Everyone involved should be questioned. It's a hard-working industry with many people, but not all should be blamed. The responsible ones will face consequences. The investigation is ongoing, and we can't alter the law for anyone; justice will be served,' he stressed. 'We will definitely see the investigation through. We can't offer a sudden solution. Issues faced by junior artists are also being addressed. With numerous names emerging, our hands are tied. We will fully support the investigation process. Our sole aim is to set things right,' he concluded. (ANI)
