Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government in Bangladesh, warned of impending health and food risks as floodwaters begin to recede. He called on citizens to unite in relief efforts, especially encouraging youth-led initiatives, as the death toll from the devastating floods reached 18, impacting 49 lakh people across 11 districts.
The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry reported that over 9,44,548 families remain stranded, with 2,84,888 people and 21,695 cattle housed in 3,527 shelters. Rescue efforts by the army, navy, coast guard, Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB), fire service, and civil defense are ongoing in coordination with district administrations.
At a meeting with 44 NGOs, Yunus urged the nation to address the flood together, citing the spirit shown during the student-people movement. With floodwaters receding, concerns about waterborne diseases and health issues are rising. Yunus, a Nobel laureate, emphasized the crucial role of NGOs and youth in overcoming the crisis.
