Customs Thwart Smuggling Attempt: 778 Star Tortoises Seized at Chennai Airport

Customs officials at Chennai Airport seized 778 Star Tortoises from three passengers attempting to smuggle them to Kuala Lumpur. The tortoises, wrapped in adult diapers, were discovered during a baggage search. The accused were arrested and charged under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. This act protects vulnerable species like Star Tortoises from illegal trade.

Chennai Airport Customs officials intercepted three passengers attempting to smuggle 778 Star Tortoises to Kuala Lumpur.

Wrapped in adult diapers, the tortoises were discovered during a baggage search at the international terminal on August 16.

The accused were arrested and charged under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, which protects vulnerable species from illegal trade.
