The Supreme Court on Tuesday urged the Union government to introduce a daily special news bulletin on Doordarshan, catered specifically to visually impaired, deaf, and hard of hearing individuals.

Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan instructed Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati to consult with Prasar Bharti regarding this initiative.

Doordarshan has a precedent, having initiated its first weekly bulletin for the hearing impaired on October 15, 1987.

The apex court expects a positive response by August 28 and has given a week for Bhati to file an affidavit on the PIL submitted by Sanket Foundation, seeking subtitles on films and TV news for the deaf and hard of hearing.
