Ashley Avis to Helm 'American Wolf' Adaptation

Screenwriter and director Ashley Avis will write and direct 'American Wolf,' based on Nate Blakeslee's novel, about the life and struggles of the alpha female wolf O-Six. The project is produced by Appian Way with consulting producer Blakeslee, following Avis' recent acclaimed documentary work.

American screenwriter and director Ashley Avis has been selected to write and direct 'American Wolf,' a film adaptation of Nate Blakeslee's novel, Variety reports. The narrative centers on O-Six, an alpha female wolf whose story of rise and tragic fall brought global attention to the plight of her species. Her journey intertwines with those of a reclusive naturalist, a devoted campaigner, and a fearless scientist who places everything on the line to protect Yellowstone's fragile wolf community.

The film, set to be produced by Appian Way, will see Blakeslee taking on the role of consulting producer. Appian Way, led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, pivoted to Avis after being impressed by her documentary, 'Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West,' which scrutinized the U.S. government's handling of wild horse populations. Avis' involvement was solidified when Appian Way pitched 'American Wolf' to Apple.

'Wild Beauty' garnered a 2023 Critics Choice Award nomination and earned Avis a Special Congressional Commendation. Renowned for her commitment to animal rights, she has actively opposed the mistreatment of wolves. Avis is also directing the remake of 'City of Angels' for Warner Bros and recently directed 'The Lamb' in Saudi Arabia. Her previous notable work includes the Disney+ reprisal of 'Black Beauty.' Together with her husband Edward Winters, she co-founded Winterstone Pictures in Los Angeles, reports Variety. (ANI)
