Prunella Scales Brings Queen Victoria to Life Despite Dementia

Renowned British actor Prunella Scales, despite her battle with vascular dementia, has made a poignant recording for the play 'Queen' at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The play, an adaptation by Julian Machin, delves into themes of anxiety, self-doubt, and loneliness.

Scales, famous for her role as Sybil in the 1970s comedy 'Fawlty Towers,' has a deeply ingrained portrayal of Queen Victoria, which Machin knew she could bring to life despite her illness. Grace Darling and Sara Crowe perform as the younger and older Victoria alongside Scales' recorded voice.

Director Denise Silvey highlighted the play's broad appeal and efficient small cast, calling its inclusion in the festival a 'no brainer.' The Edinburgh Fringe remains a crucial platform for discussing contemporary issues, including mental health, making Scales' contribution particularly moving and relevant.
