The 122-year-old Nahoum bakery, an integral part of Kolkata's confectionery heritage, has halted the sale of chicken items citing difficulties in procuring poultry meat that adheres to specific Jewish religious standards.

Located in the historic New Market area, Nahoum's has discontinued popular items like the fluffy chicken patty due to the unavailability of Kosher chicken, which requires a particular method of slaughter not commonly practiced in Kolkata.

Spokesperson Jagadish Chandra Haldar revealed that the decision was made by Israel-based owner Adam Nahoum. 'We stopped offering chicken items due to the scarcity of Kosher chicken,' he said. The bakery also now closes on Saturdays in observance of Jewish traditions.

Despite these changes, Nahoum's will continue to serve their famous cakes and pastries. Food blogger Poorna Banerjee lamented the end of the chicken patty, recalling the daily crowds eager to buy the fresh delicacy. Established in 1902, Nahoum's Bakery remains a steadfast symbol of Kolkata's rich culinary history.
