'Inside Out 2' Becomes Pixar's Highest-Grossing Film, Hits $1.25 Billion Worldwide

Nearly a month after its release on June 14, 'Inside Out 2' has topped 'Incredibles 2' in revenue, making it Pixar's highest-grossing movie. According to Variety, the sequel has brought in $1.25 billion globally, surpassing the previous record of $1.24 billion set by 'Incredibles 2'. This accomplishment also places 'Inside Out 2' as the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time, following 'Frozen' ($1.29 billion), 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' ($1.36 billion), and 'Frozen II' ($1.45 billion).

The sequel has quickly outperformed the original 'Inside Out', which grossed $859 million worldwide in 2015. The success of 'Inside Out 2' was anticipated, especially after Walt Disney Company announced it had become the fastest animated film to reach $1 billion at the global box office, achieving this feat less than three weeks after its release.

'Inside Out 2' is now among just 11 animated films that have crossed the $1 billion mark, and it is the first to achieve this since July 2023's 'Barbie'. The film continues the story of 13-year-old Riley as she navigates new emotions during puberty and prepares for high school. Directed by Kelsey Mann, it introduces new emotions such as Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Nostalgia, alongside the original five: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust.

Amy Poehler, who returns as the voice of Joy, told PEOPLE that a sequel was always in the cards. "At the end of the original, Joy has a great moment where she's like, 'Finally, everything is the way it should be.' Then we see the big puberty button and wonder, 'Should we press this?' We do press it in the second movie," she said in September 2022.

Poehler had long been advocating for a sequel. "I've been bugging Pete Docter and the team, asking, 'When are you making another one?' When they shared their approach for the second one, I thought it was genius," she told PEOPLE in June.
