"The Umbrella Academy," an immensely popular Netflix series based on Gerard Way's comic books, is gearing up for its highly anticipated fourth and final season. After an intense cliffhanger at the end of Season 3, fans are eagerly awaiting more adventures with the Hargreeves family.
Netflix officially dropped the news on October 1, a date significant to fans as it's the Hargreeves' birthday. The announcement revealed that "The Umbrella Academy" Season 4 is scheduled to return in 2024. While a specific premiere date hasn't been confirmed, production for the fourth season commenced in February 2023. However, it's worth noting that production schedules were disrupted by strikes initiated by writers and actors demanding fair wages.

Steve Blackman, the series' showrunner, has been keeping fans engaged with tantalizing updates on his Instagram account. In April, he shared a script cover with the title "End of the Beginning (Series Finale)." The caption reads: "Last line written… @umbrellaacad @netflix @darkhorsecomics #taketwo," and episode number 4006, indicating that Season 4 will consist of only six episodes. Over the summer, he posted a sketch featuring a woman in a swirling vortex with the caption "Power. Unhinged." This enigmatic image has sparked intense speculation about the identity of the character and her role in the upcoming season.
As for the potential plot of "The Umbrella Academy" Season 4, details are still shrouded in secrecy. However, it's widely expected to pick up where Season 3 left off. This means viewers can anticipate the Hargreeves siblings grappling with new challenges as they strive to save the world once again. Notably, Luther is on a mission to find his missing wife, Sloan, and this storyline is expected to unfold in the fourth season.
One intriguing aspect to watch out for is the resolution of previous cliffhangers. Steve Blackman has hinted that the storyline of Victor and Diego will be a central theme in Season 4. He poses thought-provoking questions about their happiness without superpowers and what "normal" means to them. This exploration promises to add depth and complexity to these beloved characters.
"I want to pose to the viewer and the fan, 'Would they be happier without their powers?' I mean, all they do is complain about being who they are," said the showrunner.
"So will Victor, will Diego be happy without it or will they feel like they're missing an appendage? Will the world not be right for them anymore without powers? Can they be 'normal'?" He added, "How it is reset and the ways it will be reset is a place we're going to be going to hopefully in Season 4."
The fourth season might also introduce new plotlines, potentially involving a different timeline. The Umbrella Academy members could find themselves in an alternate universe, devoid of their superhuman abilities, leading to the separation of the siblings. The changes are substantial: Allison is reunited with Claire and Ray, Luther is no longer an ape-like creature and Five and Diego's lost limbs are miraculously restored. However, Sloane is missing, and all the siblings have been stripped of their extraordinary powers. A reinvigorated Reginald now holds control over the city, alongside his resurrected wife, Abigail. A mid-credits scene hints at Ben's presence as he rides a Seoul subway, reminiscent of his birth.
While many questions remain unanswered, fans of "The Umbrella Academy" can look forward to an exciting and mysterious fourth season that promises to delve deeper into the characters' lives and their relationship with their superhuman abilities.
