Netflix's beloved comedy series, Sex Education, has become one of their most anticipated shows. Despite being renewed for a fourth season a mere three weeks after the release of its third season, concerns have arisen about its future due to the departure of several cast members. However, there is good news for fans eagerly anticipating the coming-of-age drama's release. In February of 2023, Ncuti Gatwa, one of the show's actors, announced via an Instagram post that filming for season 4 had been completed and that it was his final time on set.

The main protagonist of the series is Otis Milburn, a student enrolled in Moordale Secondary School. At the start of the show, Otis feels uncertain about sexual matters, partly due to his mother Jean's profession as a sex therapist and her tendency to have casual relationships with men rather than committed ones.

Season 3 of Sex Education concluded on cliffhangers. Moordale High School kids have grown up, and the institution is about to close due to the sale of the school to developers, thus they will need to find alternate schooling arrangements. Adam competes in a dog agility tournament. Lily is now fairly popular, and admirers are clamoring for her signature. Hope is no longer in her post. Jean is taken aback by the test results. Erin sneaks into the classroom and gives Maeve the money for the program, but Maeve declines since she does not want to leave Otis so soon after they met.

Sex Education Season 4 is set to undergo significant changes as several stars have departed. While various relationships continue to evolve in different ways, the central plotline remains focused on the long-awaited romance between Maeve and Otis. Unfortunately, it appears that their dream romance may not be fulfilled in Season 4, leaving fans eagerly anticipating another season to resolve the issue.

With the departure of several actors and the addition of new ones, the show's dynamics are likely to shift dramatically. Notably, Simone Ashley, Patricia Allison, and Tanya Reynolds, who played Olivia, Ola, and Lily, respectively, will not be returning for Sex Education Season 4. Since Moordale has shut down, there is a chance that the three teen girls will attend different sixth-form colleges. Furthermore, Rakhee Thakkar's absence further reduces the already small cast of adult characters in the series.

To offset the departure of several cast members, a few new names have been added to the show's roster, including Jodie Turner-Smith, Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, Imani Yahshua, and Dan Levy, a star from "Schitt's Creek." Turner-Smith accepted her role after being personally invited by Ncuti Gatwa. While details about her character have yet to be disclosed, the actress revealed that all of her scenes are with Gatwa.

Sex Education Season 4 images were released in August 2022, revealing Otis and Ruby posing together, as well as Maeve's storyline and Levy's character. One picture hints that Maeve is already settled in the United States, possibly indicating a return to the show's early roots. The new season may see Otis and Eric starting a sex therapy clinic from scratch, with new characters and a fresh setting promising a departure from previous seasons.

The official synopsis reads "Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, while Eric is praying they won't be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students — they thought they were progressive but this new college is at another level. There's daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being … kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college's student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus."

Filming for Sex Education Season 4 began in late July or early August 2022, as per a behind-the-scenes photo shared by Asa Butterfield on Twitter. As written above that Ncuti Gatwa announced on Instagram in February 2023 that filming had wrapped up, and it was his last time on set. Based on this information, it's likely that the show will be released in September 2023.
