Today marks the sixth anniversary of the return of Prison Break, a beloved TV series that aired its Season 5 six years ago today. The show was initially concluded in 2009 after four successful seasons but was eventually revived by Fox for a fifth season in 2017. Despite hopes for a continuation of the series with a sixth season, Fox officially canceled those plans in 2019. The official Twitter account of the show acknowledged this milestone, tweeting, "On this day 6 years ago, Prison Break returned for Season 5."

Fox's hit TV series Prison Break captured the hearts of viewers when it first aired in 2005. The show enjoyed a successful run for four seasons, concluding in 2009. However, in January 2016, Fox announced that it would be bringing the show back for a fifth season. Prison Break Season 5 aired between April and May 2017, and fans eagerly anticipated the possibility of a Season 6. Despite hopes for a continuation of the series, it wasn't until January 2018 that Fox officially confirmed that a sixth season was in the works. Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived as the network canceled plans for a sixth season in August 2019, much to the disappointment of fans.
In late 2020, Wentworth Miller, one of the leading stars of Prison Break, confirmed the disheartening news that he had no plans to return to the series. This came as a blow to fans who had hoped for a continuation of the show, despite Fox's decision to cancel its plans for a sixth season in 2019. Miller's announcement seemed to suggest that a reunion of the original cast was unlikely, dashing the hopes of loyal viewers who had followed the show since its inception in 2005.
Reasons for Prison Break Season 6's cancellation
Prison Break Season 6 was canceled due to several factors, including the show's dip in popularity and creative problems. Despite attracting a massive fan base during its original four-season run, the series faced difficulties after Season 4 concluded the arc of Prison Break's Fox River Eight. Fox initially canceled the show due to a lack of logical direction for the series, despite speculation that it was canceled due to declining ratings.
However, nine years after Season 4, Fox decided to renew the series for a fifth-season reboot. Unfortunately, Prison Break Season 5 received poor ratings and was widely considered a disappointment, leading to doubts about the viability of a potential Season 6. Creator Paul Scheuring and Fox president Kevin Reilly had been correct in their assessment that the show had played out after Season 4, and the poor reception of Season 5 only reinforced this. The cancellation of Prison Break Season 6 was, therefore, an unsurprising outcome given the series' struggles in its later years.
Prison Break 6 was originally planned but canceled
Fox initially showed interest in continuing the show, but eventually lost enthusiasm, especially after lead actor Wentworth Miller announced his decision to not play straight characters, ruling himself out of another season.
Despite the show's initial popularity, Prison Break's audience had dwindled since its peak, and Season 5 struggled to maintain its viewership due to its predictable plot. It's a good thing that a sixth season was never produced, as it could have potentially tarnished the reputation of the previously successful series. Fox ultimately learned from their mistakes with Season 5 and made the wise decision to not proceed with Season 6.
