Succession, HBO's popular satirical black comedy-drama, is set to debut its fourth season on March 26, 2023. Unfortunately for fans of the show, the upcoming season will also be the last, according to series creator Jesse Armstrong's announcement in February. This news may have saddened some viewers, but actor Alan Ruck, who plays Connor Roy, believes it's the right time for the show to conclude.

Ruck recently spoke with Empire about Succession Season 4's ending, stating that a fifth season would have been unnecessary. He emphasized that it's better to end the show on a high note rather than to drag it out. The actor also revealed that the cast had been aware of the finale since June 2022, confirming that actor Jeremy Strong, who plays Kendall Roy, had known when asked about the possibility of an end to his character.

As for what fans can expect from Succession Season 4, Ruck hinted that not everything will be resolved. He suggested that the characters and audiences will be left with some lingering questions, adding to the show's trademark complexity and intrigue.

“The truth is we have all known on the show since June. And I think it’s the right time to end it in terms of the struggle to see who’s going to take the command of this empire. A fifth season would have been drawn out, and if it just faded away, that would have been a disgrace. Not everything is resolved. Like life itself.”

During the interview, Ruck provided some insight into his character, Connor Roy, who is the first child of the Roy family, and teased what audiences can expect from him in the upcoming final season of the show. Specifically, Ruck spoke about the absurdity of Connor's run for the Oval Office and suggested that his potential victory should not be surprising to viewers. To illustrate his point, he drew a comparison between Connor's presidential campaign and the reality of Donald Trump's unexpected 2016 win.

“I don’t think it’s far-fetched to say that this delusional man with unlimited resources could make it to the highest office in the land. We just went through what we went through with Trump, and nobody thought that would happen. And it did, and it was a mess.”

In the season 3 finale of Succession, Alexander Skarsgård's character, tech mogul Lukas Matsson, appeared poised to acquire Waystar Royco, the media conglomerate controlled by Brian Cox's character, Logan Roy. This development spelled trouble for Logan's children, played by Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, and Alan Ruck. However, it was good news for Skarsgård, who was guaranteed to return as a guest star for season 4 of the Jesse Armstrong-created series.

Skarsgård recently spoke to EW about his involvement with Succession and his enthusiasm for the show. He initially expected to appear in only two or three episodes, but the season 3 finale opened up the possibility for his character's return.

"I was a big, big fan of the show," Skarsgård tells EW for our Awardist preview, explaining how he initially got involved with Succession. "When they first reached out, I think the plan was for it to be maybe two, three episodes. But then, obviously, with how it all ended, there was an opportunity to bring Matsson back."

Regarding your latest statement, Alexander Skarsgård apparently revealed that his character, Lukas Matsson, is highly focused and driven when it comes to completing a task. Skarsgård described his character's approach as a "fun challenge" to see if he can successfully acquire Waystar Royco.

"Once he focuses on a task he is almost unstoppable and it's almost like a fun challenge to him to see if he can do this, if he can pull it off," says the actor. "He has to figure out a way to work the different members of the family and the different members of the board."
