While people gossip about psychological crime thrillers, they often touch upon David Fincher’s Mindhunter. The last Mindhunter series they enjoyed was Mindhunter season 2, which was released by Netflix on August 16, 2019. No wonder it’s been a long wait for the third season. Nowadays, fans getting more impatient after the news broke that Fincher is in talks with Netflix regarding the renewal of Mindhunter Season 3.
The series is based on the 1995 true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.
The new report claims that discussions between Netflix officials and Fincher for Mindhunter Season 3 are currently underway. Small Screen reported, "All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season. It's still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project."
Now two months after the report was posted, we wanted to see whether Netflix responded to the report and whether season three got a green light?
Till now there is no definite answer from Netflix. Although there is no official renewal news on the third run of the series, Tech Radar recently noted that Mindhunter Season 3 is currently in its early stage of development.
However, fans can continue to keep hope, as the streamer has not yet officially canceled the project. The first season debuted worldwide on Netflix on October 13, 2017, and the second run was released on August 16, 2019. The time gap between the first and second season shows that we still have time until we can finally give up hopes of a third season. Moreover, almost the entire entertainment industry is suffering now due to the pandemic.
Earlier, a Netflix insider told TVLine, "David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots, he may revisit Mindhunter in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own."
In October 2020, Fincher confirmed the series was done for now, and a Netflix spokesperson said that a third season could happen "maybe in five years".
According to the current scenario, Fincher's period drama Mank was released by Netflix and received positive reviews from critics. It has been nominated for ten Academy Awards. Fans believe Fincher will definitely bring back Mindhunter with the third season.
Mindhunter Season 3 has not been renewed by Netflix as yet. We will surely keep updating the news as soon as we get anything new.
