Percussionist Bickram Ghosh has reinvented the tradition of Durga Puja music release of yesteryears by bringing together music greats for a Bengali album this autumn.
In this album, Ghosh features some of the contemporary singers of our country who render voice to the lyrics by Srijato and Sugata Guha.
'Phirlo Pujor Gaan', the album consists of a duet by Hariharan and Kaushiki Chakroborty, solo by Shaan, a duet by Shaan and Mahalakshmi Iyer, a duet by Zubeen Garg and Sona Mohapatra, a tribute solo to R D Burman by Amit Kumar.
''Who doesn't remember the Puja albums of RD Burman and Asha ji or those of Rafi Saab and Kishore da which went onto be huge hits in the seventies,'' Ghosh told PTI Sunday.
He said most of the songs are ready and the rest will be ready soon. ''There was a time when Bengal ruled the musical trends of this country. SD Burman, RD Burman, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, etc set the trends in the vista of sound,'' Ghosh recalled.
''I wish to see the sound of Bengal resonate countrywide again. I am confident that this project will pave the way for that to happen,'' the fusion band Rhythmscape man, who started playing tabla with Pandit Ravi Shankar at the start of his career and also collaborated with artistes like George Harrison from Beatles, said.
While the Bengali version of 'Phirlo Pujor Gaan' will see a Puja release, the Hindi version is expected to be released at the end of 2021.
