American Tower Corporation Kenya (ATC Kenya), a leading provider of telecommunications infrastructure, has partnered with ProFuturo Foundation, a global initiative for educational innovation in digital environments created by the Telefónica Foundation and “la Caixa” Foundation, to bring transformative digital education to underserved communities in Kenya.
This impactful collaboration has already resulted in the successful distribution of digital tablets to 30 schools across Nairobi and Machakos Counties, significantly boosting access to modern learning tools. Building on this momentum, the program has now expanded to include 11 additional schools in Kitui County—bringing the total number of beneficiary schools to 41.
Over the next three years, the initiative is expected to directly benefit more than 11,000 students and 470 teachers, making a meaningful contribution to digital inclusion and educational equity in Kenya.
Driving Digital Inclusion Through Collaboration
The implementation of the project is being carried out with the support of two well-established local organizations: Don Bosco Development Outreach Network (DBDON) and the Catholic Diocese of Kitui. These partners play a key role in ensuring effective delivery and integration of the program at the grassroots level.
According to George Odenyo, CEO of ATC Kenya, this initiative is an embodiment of ATC Kenya’s ongoing commitment to building a more connected and digitally empowered nation.
“This project is a testament of ATC Kenya’s vision of building a more connected Kenya. It aims to enhance digital access and foster partnerships in the communities where we operate. We constantly work with key partners to ensure that our Digital Communities are well equipped to employ the use of technology for digital equity, literacy, and career upskilling—efforts that are geared towards enhancing the lives of community members,” said Odenyo.
ATC Kenya's Digital Communities Program
The project is part of ATC Kenya’s broader Digital Communities program, which provides fully equipped, internet-connected centers that offer digital literacy training for youth, financial education and vocational skills for adults, and access to health information services.
By introducing these services to underserved communities, ATC Kenya is not only promoting digital literacy but also enabling individuals to gain relevant skills that improve their socio-economic opportunities. Through its infrastructure and partnerships, the company continues to bridge the digital divide while supporting national development goals in education and technology.
ProFuturo: A Global Leader in Digital Education
ProFuturo Foundation brings its wealth of global experience in digital education to this partnership. Since its founding in 2016, ProFuturo has positively impacted over 28 million children in 45 countries, using technology to transform how education is delivered in vulnerable settings.
Magdalena Brier, General Manager of ProFuturo Foundation, expressed deep enthusiasm about the partnership’s potential:
“This agreement reinforces the commitment of the two organizations against the digital divide and the education gap. The alliance between ProFuturo Foundation and American Tower is a big step to improve educational opportunities for the most vulnerable. We are very honored with their support for what we have been doing since 2016 and I continually think about each of the teachers, boys and girls who will benefit—because, together, we are going to contribute to transform their lives.”
Technology to Empower the Classroom
The tablets distributed to schools are pre-installed with a comprehensive suite of educational applications and digital content aligned with the national curriculum. These devices are tailored to support interactive teaching methodologies and offer students hands-on learning experiences in subjects such as mathematics, science, languages, and more.
By integrating technology into the classroom, teachers are empowered to adopt innovative teaching strategies, enhance student engagement, and ultimately improve learning outcomes. For many students in the target areas, this marks their first exposure to digital tools—opening doors to future careers and lifelong learning.
Bridging the Education Gap
Beyond the delivery of hardware, the ATC Kenya–ProFuturo initiative aims to create sustainable digital learning ecosystems. This includes capacity building for teachers, ongoing technical support, and regular program monitoring to ensure that the tools are being effectively utilized in classrooms.
The initiative also addresses long-standing educational disparities that have been exacerbated by the digital divide, especially in remote and low-income areas. Through strategic partnerships and community-based implementation, the program ensures that no student is left behind in the shift to digital education.
A Vision for the Future
Together, ATC Kenya and ProFuturo are setting a precedent for corporate-social partnerships in education. Their shared vision—to enable inclusive, high-quality, and equitable digital learning—aligns with global goals such as the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).
As the program continues to scale, it promises to reach more learners, empower teachers, and foster digital resilience in communities across Kenya. This initiative underscores the belief that access to digital education is not a luxury, but a fundamental right in today’s world.
