In a significant appointment, President Droupadi Murmu has named Mazhar Asif as the new vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. This decision was confirmed by officials from the Union Ministry of Education on Thursday.

Asif, whose academic credentials include a professorship at Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of Languages, will step into the vacancy left by former VC Najma Akhtar, whose term ended in November 2023. The appointment is set for a five-year tenure or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first.

As a noted contributor to various educational initiatives, including the National Education Policy, 2020, Asif's academic portfolio is rich with accomplishments. He has published extensively and actively participates in academic discourse at national and international conferences.
