Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a series of development projects in Maharashtra valued at over Rs 7600 crore via video conference. A key highlight of these projects was the inauguration of the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai, which aims to equip India’s youth with the advanced skills required for Industry 4.0, positioning them for both national and global employment opportunities.

Building a Future-Ready Workforce

The Indian Institute of Skills (IIS), launched through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Tata IIS (a Section 8 company under Tata Trusts), seeks to address the growing demand for a skilled workforce. The institute is designed to provide cutting-edge training in emerging fields such as factory automation, digital manufacturing, mechatronics, artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and additive manufacturing.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of preparing the Indian youth for global opportunities. He noted, “The world only trusts a country whose youth are confident and skilled. Today’s India is confident, and the global community recognizes India as a hub for human resources in fields such as education, skilling, healthcare, and software development.”

A Collaborative Effort to Shape the "Skill Capital of the World"

The launch of IIS Mumbai marks a pivotal moment in realizing Prime Minister Modi's vision of making India the "Skill Capital of the World." Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, highlighted the institute’s role in empowering India’s youth, stating, “By equipping our youth with cutting-edge expertise, this institute is opening doors not only within India but across global markets as well.”

Located on a 4-acre campus within the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) in Chunabhatti, Mumbai, IIS offers specialized training and hands-on experience in advanced technologies. The initial courses include Advanced Industrial Automation & Robotics, Electric Vehicle Battery Specialist, and Additive Manufacturing, among others. The institute plans to add hostel facilities soon to enhance the learning experience.

Bridging Skills with Industry Demands

With an initial collaboration involving over 15 global and Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), the IIS aims to ensure that trainees gain practical experience using real industry equipment. These partnerships include prominent names such as Fanuc India (for Industrial Robotics), SMC India (for Industrial Automation), and Taj Skyline (for Culinary & Housekeeping training).

Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Maharashtra's Minister for Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, praised the collaboration, calling it a state-of-the-art facility that would draw international attention. “The Tata Group has built a reputation for trust and growth, making this an invaluable opportunity for candidates. The Prime Minister’s focus on upskilling has been instrumental in funding ongoing and future skilling initiatives.”

Future Prospects and Industry Integration

As India’s economy continues to expand, the demand for a highly skilled and adaptable workforce grows in tandem. Venu Srinivasan, Chairman of Tata IIS, remarked, “India’s economic growth depends on a skilled workforce capable of driving productivity and national development. The IIS, Mumbai, is a testament to the Tata Group’s vision of tackling national challenges and empowering youth to secure meaningful employment.”

With plans for short-term courses, IIS Mumbai is set to become a premier institution for skill development, bolstering India’s position as a global leader in workforce training. In addition to technical skills, the institute aims to foster entrepreneurial talent, enabling the youth to transition smoothly into a rapidly evolving job market.

A National Milestone

The inauguration of IIS Mumbai is part of a broader vision that aligns with India’s growing global role in technology and human resource development. The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024, also set to take place in India, underscores the country's increasing influence in shaping global technological standards.

With the IIS poised to train the next generation of workers in advanced technologies, India’s youth are being positioned not only to contribute to the domestic economy but also to play a crucial role in the global marketplace.

Distinguished Attendees and Acknowledgments

The launch event was attended by key dignitaries, including Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and Nilambuj Sharan, Senior Economic Advisor. Top figures from Tata Trusts and Tata Companies, such as Siddharth Sharma, CEO of Tata Trusts, and Sabyasachi Das, CEO of Tata IIS, were also present.
