The University of Mumbai has finally conducted its long-delayed senate elections for 10 seats. The race sees the Shiv Sena (UBT) looking to fortify its dominance while the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is challenging the status quo.
An official reported that around 55% of registered voters cast their ballots across 38 polling centers and 64 booths, on a day directed by the Bombay High Court, following a postponement by state authorities. The decision-making body is due crucial votes regarding the university's budget and governance.
The Shiv Sena (UBT), which previously won all seats, is facing strong contenders, including from ABVP and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's student wing. Notably, key figures from the Thackeray family participated in the voting, emphasizing the election's high prestige for the party. Allegations of misconduct have surfaced, with ABVP accusing Sena (UBT) of unethical tactics. The results will be declared on September 27.
