Journalist groups in Assam have voiced strong condemnation against IIT Guwahati for restricting reporters from campus access following the alleged suicide of a student, which incited widespread protests among the student community.
The institute, in a Wednesday statement, requested journalists to avoid visiting the campus in order to manage the situation more effectively. This move provoked uproar among media representatives, who were turned away from the gates.
Leaders from the National Correspondents' Group and the Gauhati Press Club demanded an apology and stressed that preventing media coverage hampers factual reporting, opposing the fundamental principles of journalism.
