A 21-year-old student preparing for NEET-UG in Kota allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of a rented room in a house on Wednesday night.

This incident marks the 14th case of student suicide in the coaching hub Kota since January, with 26 such cases reported in the city in 2023.

The father of the deceased blamed the alleged NEET-24 exam scam for his son's extreme step. Despite this, he did not level any formal accusation in his report to the police. No suicide note was recovered from the room where the student was staying.

The deceased, Parshuram Jatav, 21, a resident of Barsana in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, last spoke to his father on Wednesday around 1:15 PM, expressing his wish to return home.

His father, Khacharmal, urged him to come back, but subsequent calls went unanswered.

The tragedy came to light around 11 PM Wednesday when the house owner knocked on Parshuram's door, having not seen him since the evening. The caretaker alerted the police, who arrived promptly, broke down the door, recovered the body, and moved it to the mortuary at MBS hospital.

Khacharmal, a mason, reached Kota on Thursday morning. In a media interaction outside the mortuary, he held the NEET-UG-24 exam 'scam' responsible for his son's suicide.

He revealed that it was Parshuram's second attempt at the NEET-24 exam. Initially, he scored 647 marks, but following revision, his marks were reduced to 247 (66%), leading to his depression.

Khacharmal accused the NEET exam agency and affluent individuals of manipulating the exam results, resulting in his son's death.

He also mentioned that Parshuram excelled in his studies, earning a scholarship from a coaching institute in Kota. He spent two years previously in Kota and returned recently to prepare for his third NEET attempt, securing admission in another coaching institute.

Authorities have yet to identify the precise trigger for Parshuram's suicide.

''No suicide note was recovered from the room, and the motive behind the extreme act remains under investigation,'' stated assistant sub-inspector Jawahar Singh of Jawahar Nagar police station.

The body was handed over to the family post-mortem on Thursday noon, and a case under section 194 of the BNS has been registered for further investigation, confirmed circle inspector Harinarayan Sharma.
