As the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union's (JNUSU) indefinite hunger strike reaches its sixth day, the well-being of several protestors has significantly deteriorated. The students commenced the strike on August 11, expressing discontent over the administration's purported lack of response to their list of demands.

When asked for a comment, JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit remarked that the university does not recognize an official students union and cited a funding crunch and legal limitations as reasons for being unable to meet the demands.

The JNUSU accused the administration of disregarding the health of students, some of whom show severe symptoms. Their demands include an increase in the Merit-cum-Means scholarship, operationalization of Barak Hostel, and the reinstatement of the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH), among others.
