Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced an ambitious plan to merge 165 schools with low student numbers into nearby schools to improve educational quality and optimize resources. An extensive survey undertaken by the state Education Department identified these schools as part of a strategy to rationalize student and teacher distribution for greater efficiency.

'Raising the alarm over the move to rationalize students and teachers in state-run schools will not bring fruitful results. Schools mushroomed in the state due to political reasons. We have to ensure quality education by merging schools with low number of students with schools that have a good number of students,' Saha stated on Sunday, addressing reporters.

Saha revealed that some schools operate with as few as four students and a couple of teachers. The merger aims not only to benefit students by addressing the staffing shortage but also to ensure that resources are better utilized. The consolidation effort will focus on merging schools within a 1 km radius.

Additionally, the chief minister discussed measures to tackle traffic congestion in Agartala. Saha had consulted with engineers on constructing more flyovers to facilitate smoother vehicular movement in the city.
